Angeles de Medellin Olympics Video

Here's the latest video by volunteers Charlotte Joyce and Oliver Davis, showing footage from the Angeles de Medellin's own Olympics held on Saturday July 21, 2012.  The event was a sports day for over 350 kids from the communities living in the mountains above Medellin. Great fun was had by all and following the games, gifts including fruit and kites were given out to over 400 kids.

On Saturday July 21, 2012 The Angeles de Medellin held their own LONDRES Olympics for over 350 children in the mountains.  The Volunteers spent a full day making 8 flags from Great Britain, United States, Canada, Brazil, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and of course COLOMBIA.

Each team had 3 adult Captains, and after 8 different events Brazil and New Zealand tied for 1st place.  The highlight race of all events was the LEAP FROG event where a dust storm was created with hundreds of kids leaping over one another laughing, falling and doing their best to win a medal.

Thanks to Larry Guilford each child from the top 3 teams actually received a medal and the cheers from each country yelling come on Colombia, come on Gran Britiana, go USA made it a wonderful day.

After the Olympics the children enjoyed fruit, candy, cookies and a gift from many people throughout the world that donated money to Los Angelitos de Medellin.

Thank you to all the Volunteers, Children and the good weather for a special day in the mountains of Medellin, Colombia.

Hello everyone from the program ANGELES DE MEDELLIN.  On November 1st, 2011 through the generous donation of an American friend Carmen Mancini, Los Angelitos of Medellin opened a new office in the barrio Regalo de Dios in the city of Bello, Colombia, South America. 

Since November there have been over 300 volunteers from over 23 countries, 20 States in the USA and 3 Canadian Provinces that have volunteered their time and made donations to the children and families of Medellin, Colombia.

Daily, between 40 to 80 children and adults visit the office of the Angeles, learn English, computers, play and learn games, draw and make crafts and play different sports from American softball, soccer and American football.

Without the help and love given by the volunteers I could never do this alone.

I welcome new volunteeers and thank all the volunteers from all over the world for making the Angeles de Medellin program unique, different and special.

Leon XIII - New school Year - February 1, 2011

The Angeles de Medellin will be painting Leon XIII on Saturday, January 29th so when the kids start classes on February 1st the school will be clean and nice looking. I have purchased school supplies for the children including book bags, notebooks, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpners.

I look forward to a new schoo0l year which marks my 5th year volunteer teaching at Leon XIII.

Angeles de Medellin ~ Christmas 2010

This year there were 2 Christmas party's. First on December 18th and then on December 23rd. Over 3,000 children received toys, fruits and candy and 1,100 families received bags of food.

Thank you all for donating and making the 4th annual Christmas party an overwhelming success.

Happy New Year to everyone and a special thanks to the volunteers and donors who made this day special. This video is dedicated to you all. You are the Angeles of Medellin.

Helping Displaced Children in Medellin, Colombia

Hello, my name is Mark Kaseman and I am from Fairport, New York. I have lived in Medellin, Colombia since May of 2005. Since March 2006, I have worked with the poor and displaced children and families that live high in the mountains above the city of Medellin. My program is called ANGELES DE MEDELLIN.

Thanks to donations from loving people around the world, I am able to purchase food, clothing, medicine and school supplies for children and their families. All donations go directly to helping these families. I work out of my home in Medellin and have no staff. A wonderful Colombian lady named Sara Zuluaga Parodi, has volunteered in helping me for various events especially with translations since June of 2009.

I volunteer teach at a private school, Leon XIII, located in the mountains where I work. Five days a week, Monday through Friday, I travel an hour and a half from my home to assist in teaching classes in English and Computers. In March of 2010, Allen Chen, a generous American from Los Angeles, California, donated 5 computer systems to our school. Because of his gift over 250 children, ages 5 – 17, have now begun learning to type and use computers. 98% of the children in my school Leon XIII had never touched a keyboard in their lives before this March.

Every day that I work in the mountains, I marvel at the love and kindness that these children and their families have given to me. For the past 5 years I have been blessed with hundreds of new-found friends. These lovely people are poor but happy, caring and loving, humble and appreciate everything that I am able to do for them. Many homes are made of plastic sheeting wrapped around wooden poles with dirt floors. They are all displaced from Colombia's 60 year civil war and civil violence in the city of Medellin itself. These families are innocent victims of gang violence and have had to flee their former homes or farms with just clothes and nothing else.

Because of the generosity of many “Angels,” I have been able to sponsor events and provide support thoughout the year. This past year, I purchased crutches for a 19-year-old girl named Viviana, who lives in abject poverty. She was born without one leg and is missing most of her fingers. Yet every day, she cooks and maintains her home for her 3 brothers while her mother works as a cleaning lady in the city. Viviana is my HERO! She smiles and is happy every time I see her. She is just one story of the many lives that I have been able to touch and make better because of friends learning about my program and helping me help her and her family.

Please give some thought to helping me bring smiles to more children and become an Angel of Medellin.
